The gala closing ceremony of the 3rd Galina Vishnevskaya International Opera Singers Competition took place on June 7 at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater. The prize winners of the Competition were congratulated by Andrei Busygin, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, and Sergei Khudyakov, Head of the Moscow City Department of Culture, who remarked that the young singers were extremely fortunate to have had an opportunity to take part in a competition organized by Galina Vishnevskaya.
Galina Vishnevskaya, chairman of the jury, and Elena Oporkova, director of the Opera Centre, likewise warmly congratulated the prize winners and handed them the Competition statuettes, medals and diplomas. Galina Vishnevskaya expressed her thanks to the Moscow City Government and personally to Mayor Yury Luzhkov for his invaluable support of the Competition, as co-chairman of the Organizing Committee, and of all of the activity of the Opera Centre.
First-prize winner of the Competition was tenor Khachatur Badalyan, a soloist of Novaya Opera Theater and an invited guest soloist of the Bolshoi Theater. Second prize for female voice went to mezzo-soprano Viktoria Grig, a soloist of the Opera Centre, and for male voice to baritone Mikhail Gushchenko, a student at the Moscow Conservatory. Third prize for female voice was divided between sopranos Alexandra Maksimova and Tatyana Trenogina, and for male voice went to baritone Alexander Gontsa of Belarus.
The second part of the closing ceremony was devoted to a concert by the prize winners, accompanied by a symphony orchestra under the direction of Yaroslav Tkalenko.
The 4th Galina Vishnevskaya International Opera Singers Competition will take place in Moscow in May 2012.
